Three for three at Western Districts A Class

Verve at Ballarat

The Western District A Class on 11 December 2004 was the debut for our two December 2003 babies, Mahdiaa and Verve, and was also the first show of the season for the lovely Ashika Shaklana.

It was pleasing to see a good entry of quality horses, and even more pleasing when Mahdiaa, Ashika Shaklana and Verve all proceeded to win their classes, Ashika and Verve (at right) then topped off the show by being awarded Champion Filly and Champion Colt respectively.

Shakara starts her show career in style

Shakara The lovely yearling filly Shakara debuted in the show ring at the A Class Geelong Indoor Titles on 17 October 2004. She performed like an old stager and was awarded Reserve Champion Yearling Filly in strong company to our delight.

We were even more delighted when she was awarded Champion Yearling Filly at the Victorian Championships on 30 October 2004, two weeks later. This is an award her aunt Valouria won two years earlier at her debut and certainly augurs well for a promising show career.

Shakara is not only beautiful, she has a real desire to please and is a pleasure to do anything with. She is available for sale and will make a top show horse and future broodmare. With her class and temperament, she would be a stand out in the amateur ring.

A day for sisters

Shazadi 30 October 2004 is a day we won't forget in a hurry!

It was the day the lovely Shakara was awarded 2004 Victorian Champion Yearling Filly in very strong company.

At the same time, her dam Shakeelah was busy producing Shazadi, a lovely full sister to Shakara, also by SK Shakla Khan.

Who could ask for more?

As we are in the fortunate position of having two lovely full sisters, Shakara is available for sale to a discerning home.

Cherox Miguela breaks her personal filly drought

Messalena with MiguelaWe were extra delighted when Cherox Miguela produced a beautiful filly, Messalena, on 4 October 2004.

Miguela has been a superb broodmare for us and Messalena's full siblings by Sarezin have all been major show ring stars, including the East Coast Reserve Champions and Australian National Top Ten's Madaan and Mazhar. Trouble is, most of Miguela's progeny have been boys! Messalena is only her third filly (from eight foals), and the only full sister to Maazina, dam of our lovely Mahdiaa.

Messalena is a gorgeous representative of the Sarezin/Miguela cross. She is tall and pretty with terrific conformation and great athleticism and movement. Her neck and neck set are exceptional. She will be a great show horse in hand and under saddle and like her big sister should breed on extremely well. She is currently available for sale.

Kids and Horses

Zimraan The horsey action has been very much focused around our family this month!

Our second foal of the year was born on 4 September 2004. Zimraan (pend) is a beautiful chestnut colt by Sarezin from Misaka, and is therefore a full brother to the Supreme Champion Zahrah owned by Elmridge Stud. Zahrah, like all Sarezin children, has a wonderful temperament, and we expect that Zimraan will be the same.

Spencer with mother, Vanessa, and GenevieveMy 13 year old step daughter Samantha was with him from birth and saw him take his first steps. Of course it was love at first sight and Zimraan will be gelded and kept as Sam's next horse when she outgrows her Arabian Riding Pony, Pollyanna of Astral.

The following Saturday we picked up the current Australian National Reserve Champion Arabian Pony Filly, Woranora Genevieve, who has been at the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre, being saddle trained for her four year old owner, Spencer.

Spencer is very pleased to have Genevieve back and the picture (right) shows him enjoying his first ride on his pony.

A Star is Born!

Antaarez - two days old We are delighted to announce the arrival of our first foal for 2004. Amira El Marieshaah presented us with a superb colt in the early hours of 26 August. Antaarez is named the red star, Antares, because it describes him perfectly! Antaarez

Antaarez is a full brother to the dual Australian National Top Ten filly Azima and her equally beautiful sister, Ashika Shaklana.

He is a superb colt and a worthy heir to his illustrious Australian National Champion sire, Sarezin.

We envisage Antaarez creating his own dynasty.

2004 Australian National Championships

Genevieve at the AussiesOur 2004 Australian National Championships stars were like the big and little show.

First up, we were delighted when our Arabian Pony two year old filly, Woranora Genevieve, who is under 12hh, was awarded Australian National Reserve Champion Arabian Pony Filly in a very strong class (at right).

Azima at the Australian ChampionshipsThen our very tall and lovely two year old filly, Azima, was awarded Australian National Top Ten Purebred Filly in what is always one of the strongest classes of the Championships (see left). Interestingly, she was one of only two yearling fillies from the Top Ten in 2003 who were awarded Top Ten honours in 2004. Our own Valouria was of course home in the paddock, having the year off, and will recontest in 2005.

Congratulations to Jesris Arabians with their Australian National Reserve Champion Mare award with D'amors Maaritza Khan, a daughter of our lovely Amira El Marieshaah, and half sister to Azima.

Congratulation also to Elmridge Stud with their Australian National Top Ten Purebred Mare Award with the gorgeous (and now a mature 9 year old) Safiyah, a grand daughter of Sarika. Safiyah is a Twice Australian Reserve Champion and three times Top Ten – whoever the judges, they just love Safiyah!

Syrah at the 2004 Feature Show

Madaan at the Feature ShowThe 2004 Feature Show on 31 January and 1 February 2004 saw a return to the show ring for Madaan (see left). Madaan has not been shown since his Top Ten at the Australian Championships in March 2002.

We all felt pretty happy about having our lovely boy out, and I think he was pretty happy about it too. He settled right into the routine and enjoyed it tremendously.

It was particularly gratifying that he was awarded Champion Stallion on both days under two different judges.

Ashika Shaklana at the Feature ShowHis yearling half sister, Ashika Shaklana (see right), added to the family laurels by being awarded Reserve Champion Filly.

Genevieve with handler Anne and SpencerAnd Madaan's full brother Miraak was Reserve Champion Junior Gelding for his devoted new owner, Julie Smith.

Spencer was particularly pleased with his pony, Woranora Genevieve, who was awarded Champion Arabian Pony Female in tough competition (that's him clutching 'his' ribbon at left).

2004 East Coast Championships

Shala at East CoastCongratulations to Elmridge Stud and Rhianna Wynn on the success of their Sarezin progeny at the 2004 East Coast Championships, judged by Jack Maritz of South Africa. Sarezin is of course an integral part of the Syrah breeding programme.

MazharElmridge Stud's gorgeous filly Shala was awarded East Coast Champion Yearling Filly to the acclaim of the large crowd. Shala's dam is the beautiful Safiyah, twice Reserve Australian National Champion and a Sarika grand daughter. Shala therefore has two crosses to Syrah's foundation mare, Sarika.

Rhianna's Mazhar was bred by Syrah and was awarded East Coast Reserve Champion Junior Gelding. As it was Rhianna's birthday, it was a lovely birthday present for her.

As Shala and Mazhar were the only Sarezin progeny competing at the show, it was an overwhelming endorsement of Sarezin as a sire.

Victorian Arabian Classic – New Years Eve 2003

We took a team of five horses to the 34th Arabian Classic, Victoria's premier show. The show had a very big entry of quality horses. The purebreds were judged by Lenita Perroy from Brazil and the derivatives were judged by Phil Ryan from NSW.

Our team included the purebreds Miraak, Ashika Shaklana and Azima, the Arabian Pony, Woranora Genevieve and the Arabian Riding Pony, Ascot Porcelain Doll ("Poppy"), pictured at left.

It was the second show for Miraak and Ashika Shaklana, and the first show in our ownership for Genevieve.

Our results were as follows:

Miraak First 2 year old Gelding
Ashika Shaklana First yearling Filly
Azima First 2 year old Filly
Woranora Genevieve First 2/3 year old Arabian Pony Filly
Ascot Porcelain Doll First 2/3 year old Arabian Riding Pony Filly, Champion Arabian Riding Pony Female and Supreme Arabian Riding Pony Exhibit.

It was a feat of consistency as all three purebreds are by Sarezin, and were the only Sarezin progeny exhibited. Syrah's mare Amira El Marieshaah was also very consistent, as not only did her daughters Ashika Shaklana and Azima win their classes, her oldest daughter D'amors Maaritza Khan, owned by Silvio Galea, won the mare 8 years and over class.

We were of course thrilled with Poppy's Supreme, an award her mother won some years ago.

A Christmas present for Syrah

Verve at 5 days old

At 3 am on Christmas Eve, Salida presented us with a gorgeous colt by TR Viktor.

Verve is all quality. I was sure when he had half emerged that he was a filly, as his head is so lovely and refined, but as soon as he found his legs, his attitutude showed that he is all boy!

Verve is a full brother to our Australian National Champion Yearling Filly, Valouria.

and looking forward to 2004...

With all three foals safely here now, we are looking forward to these babies hitting the show ring.

Shakara with Shakeelah
As we have been blessed with two outstanding fillies, and as Shakeelah is again in foal to SK Shakla Khan, Shakara will be available to a discerning home.

Shakara, a gorgeous chestnut filly by SK Shakla Khan from Shakeelah, was born at 6.15 am on the 15th September.

Shakara will make a fantastic show filly and with her wonderful pedigree, will be a superb broodmare later on.

MahdiaaThe lovely grey filly Mahdiaa (at right and below), arrived on 2 December 2003, although not due until late December. Her mother Maazina was clearly not going to go to term, but she developed a little more quickly than we expected!

Mahdiaa with MaazinaMahdiaa is the first foal for Maazina (Sarezin - Cherox Miguela) and is by SK Shakla Khan (imp US). She is a variant on the very successful cross between Sarezin and Shakla Khan, although as the four year old Maazina is Sarezin's oldest daughter, it is the first time the cross has been performed this way around.

El Aaliyah Stud in Germany owns the International Champion Colt, Saskatoon, and Elmridge Stud own the incredibly gorgeous yearling filly, Shala, both by Sarezin out of Shakla Khan daughters.

Mahdiaa is everything we hoped for from the breeding, and we are pretty keen to hang onto her. Many thanks to Fiona and Tom Selwyn for leasing us Maazina.

Movements at Syrah

Miraak with Julie at the Feature ShowIt gives us great pleasure to announce the sale of Miraak to Julie Smith as her next show ring star.

Julie has previously partnered her gelding Lizwood Park Ghazal to top awards, including Australian National Champion, and was looking for a young horse to follow in his footsteps. We have great hopes for their future together.

Pictured – Julie with Miraak at their first show together, the 2004 Feature Show.

Miraak stars at Syrah's first show of the season

Syrah's first show of the season was the A Class Victorian Championships on 1 November, 2003 judged by Mark Gamlin of the UK.

Miraak at Victorian Championships - photo Derek O'Leary Miraak at Victorian Championships - photo Derek O'Leary

Our team consisted of our lovely 2 year old Azima, and was the debut for the 2 year old gelding Miraak and the yearling filly Ashika Shaklana.

The two novices proved to be excellent show horses, travelling well and settling in at the showgrounds, and doing everything right in the ring.

First to show was Ashika Shaklana. She was Top 5 Yearling Filly in a large and quality class, with the judge commenting on what a lovely filly she is.

Miraak was next, in a strong Junior Gelding Class, including the champion and reserve from the earlier SEAHC A Class. We were delighted when he was awarded Champion Junior Gelding. The judge thought he was a lovely gelding and commented on his great correct conformation, wonderful shoulder and said that he'd love to hop on and ride him. We think he'll make a great performance horse too, and he is for sale!

Ashika was then awarded Top 5 Junior Filly in a strong class of lovely fillies and was again described as a beautiful filly.

All in all, a positive start to the season.

Success at National Arabian Horse Stud Show for Mazhar

Rhianna riding MazharCongratulations to Mazhar and his owner Rhianna Wynn on winning Reserve Champion Junior Arabian Gelding at the 2003 National Arabian Stud Horse Show on 15 November in hot company.

Mazhar is the first Arabian owned by Rhianna, and not only did she prepare and show him herself, she has also started him under saddle herself this year (see photo at left).

Mazhar is the first horse Rhianna has broken in, and she has him going extremely well.

Mazhar is an extremely lucky horse to have such a devoted owner. He clearly adores Rhianna and they have a special bond.

Mazhar is of course a full brother to Miraak, whose success is reported in the news item above.

Syrah success at the 2003 Australian National Arabian Championships

It was a team of young chestnut girls who made the long trip up to Sydney for the 2003 Australian National Arabian Championships. We took three yearling fillies, Valouria and Azima, the purebreds, and Ascot Porcelain Doll ("Poppy"), the Arabian Riding Pony. Another Syrah bred horse, the two year old gelding Mazhar owned by Rhianna Wynn, and already living in Sydney, was also entered.

It is a long trip for babies, but they all handled it admirably, and the three are certainly now the best of friends!

Poppy with delighted handler Anne McIntoshThe Judges for the Junior Purebreds were Scott Brumfield (USA), Ann Norden (Sweden) and Peter Pond (Australia). The Arabian Riding Ponies were judged by Scott Brumfield, Peter Pond and Debra Watson (Australia).

Poppy was the first to show, in fact she was the first horse in the ring in the first class in the indoor arena for the Championships. We were thrilled when she was awarded Australian National Champion Yearling Arabian Riding Pony in a good sized class, filled with quality horses. She was placed first on two judges cards and was the only pony in the class on the cards of all three judges.

Mazhar at the East CoastThe next Syrah bred horse to compete was Rhianna Wynn's Mazhar. Rhianna did a superb job getting him ready for the show out of the paddock, and like all Sarezin babies, he is just getting better and better with age. We were all thrilled when he was awarded Australian National Top Ten Junior Gelding. The award was actually a Top Five award, as five horses were awarded. The judges commented after the show on the high standard of the gelding classes.

Valouria winsLast, but far from least, it was Valouria and Azima's turn to show in a very large class of exquisite fillies. A huge cheer arose from the crowd as Valouria was unanimously awarded the title of Australian National Champion Yearling Filly and our joy was compounded with Azima being awarded Australian National Top Ten Yearling Filly. Again, the high quality of the yearling fillies was commented on by the judges.

So three Syrah bred and one Syrah owned horse showed for two Australian National Champions and two Australian National Top Ten awards. It is worth noting that Mazhar was the only foal bred by Syrah in the year he was born, and Valouria and Azima were the only fillies bred by Syrah in the year that they were born. We certainly celebrated that achievement!
